Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
