Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
